12:00-1:30pm
Cumberland Club 116 High Street, Portland

Coffee By Design opened its doors 22 years ago with two goals—to give back to the local community and provide their customers with a superior coffee experience. In 1994 owners Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear opened their first Coffee By Design coffeehouse in Portland, Maine.

What started as a humble coffeehouse with a part-time barista, has grown into a sustainable business that currently employs 45 individuals in its four coffeehouses and micro roastery.

Please join Women Standing Together and Mary Allen Lindemann as support her in her question for us:

How do you stay relevant as an older business, honoring your core customers while attracting new?

Somehow, Mary Allen Lindemann knew that a B.A. in poetry from Brown University would lead to an interesting and meaningful career. Before life as Coffee By Design’s owner and Community Builder, Mary Allen spent ten years working in advertising, retail and wholesale clothing companies, and marketing. She marketed everything from IBM computers to tourism and economic development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She also worked on marketing projects for Safeway supermarkets and Peek Freans cookies. What Mary Allen never would have guessed was how her life would change the day she tried a Caffè Latte while living in Seattle in the late 1980s before the specialty coffee boom really took hold.

Today, Mary Allen is dedicated to ensuring that Coffee By Design stays true to its Maine roots and maintains its commitment to giving back to the local and international communities to which Coffee By Design is intimately connected. Part of her job is to make sure the company continues to be a “good corporate citizen” while making social change happen in a unique and meaningful way. Mary Allen believes “it is an honor to represent the many farmers we buy from by serving you a great cup of coffee.”  She hopes that the work she does on a daily basis at Coffee By Design and in the community makes a difference now and in the years to come. Mary Allen is also a proud mother to her daughter Alina.
