When you think of divorce, people usually are referring to the legal process that they must go through. But a divorce is more than just a legal decision -- all areas of your life are affected by this change. Your health, work, family, finances, pets, and housing are all impacted. Do you have a plan for this?
The consequences of divorce are significant:
- A woman's financial situation is typically reduced by 27-37%, while a man's financial situation improves.
- Cardiac events in women increase by 34% during divorce.
- Work productivity prior to and during a divorce is reduced by 40-75%.
- Depression increases in men 6 times and 3.5 times for women.
A legal professional will guide an individual through the legal process. You also need to make a plan to address the other areas of your life that will also change.
Deb Hutson created Unraveling the Knot™ to help individuals manage the overwhelm of a divorce and to develop a plan for creating a new life post-divorce by providing support, resources, and a thinking partner in the process. Some of the things she can help with are:
- Getting organized for meetings with attorneys and financial planners
- Setting realistic expectations for the process that will support a client's future plans
- Guiding clients to clarify their thoughts, needs, and concerns in order to communicate more effectively with other professionals
- Supporting the client to become informed so that they can make important decisions with confidence
- Recommending other professionals who can support the client's new journey
The challenge question for Women Standing Together is:

Deb Hutson is a realtor with Bean Group Real Estate and a Certified Divorce Coach. She has walked the walk of post-divorce chaos and knows firsthand many of the pitfalls to be negotiated in this new terrain. A former educator and trainer, Deb saw how divorce impacted her clients' real estate transactions, and she became a Certified Real Estate Divorce Specialist™ (CREDS) to better learn how to support clients in this area. While working with clients, friends, and colleagues going through divorce, she learned that most people don't know how to look at the bigger picture to understand what other decisions need to be addressed in a divorce. She has created Unraveling the Knot™ to provide the education, support, and resources to move people through the process.
